The next few days will see Channel 4 bosses biting their finger nails to see whether the injection of new housemates into the show will revive, or at least maintain, viewing figures.

Despite a spike in figures for Friday night's eviction of Charley, the average nightly audience remains the lowest since the series began eight years ago.

And with Chanelle now having joined Charley in leaving the house, the two main subjects of interest have gone.

So it's over to student Kara-Louise Horne, 22, and store manager David Parnaby, 25, to pick up the baton. They were chosen by the regular housemates to move into the main house while Ziggy volunteered to go in the other direction to spend some time in the halfway house.

It's all a bit confusing.

And it appears the inclusion of Shanessa - who has already seen fit to perform a lap dance for Gerry and discard what little clothing she went in with - and Jonty, who is a 38-year-old eccentric (nutter) who plays with puppets, is a clear attempt by programme makers to revert to shock tactics to get viewers.

So expect more car crash TV over the next few days...

Charley was, as expected, evicted on Friday to the usual chorus of booing and sneering from the only people in the world sadder than the housemates - those who actually queue up at the studio to watch them come out.

No sooner had the dust settled than Big Brother announced the 'new twist' (that everyone knew was going to happen) and threw five more housemates into the mix.

They will be stationed in a 'halfway house' and take part in various swap deals and tasks with regular contestants before some of them are evicted.

The five are a typically freakish bunch of weirdos, including a man who practises withcraft, a glamour model and the former leader of a Doctor Who society.

Anyone who watched them go in would have been unfortunate enough to see care assistant Shanessa strutting about in a far too revealing outift that made her look like a cross between Jade Goody and Lynne Perrie.

We've also seen Chanelle finally decide to quit after splitting up with Ziggy (again). Her walkout lasted all of half an hour after Big Brother persuaded her to go back in and think her decision over.

No doubt they're keen not to lose the Ziggy and Chanelle circus just yet as ratings for the show are at their lowest since the series launched eight years ago, with an average of 3.7m viewers tuning in each night.

A typically bullish Channel 4 spokesman said: 'It consistently beats its slot average and attracts a huge number of young, upmarket viewers.'

Yeah right...

I'm not a betting man but I'm going to put all my faith in the bookmakers and declare that Charley will be evicted on Friday.

According to The Sun, Ladbrokes are among a host of bookies who have already paid out on the gobby Londoner being evicted.

And, with this blog not being updated again until Monday morning, I suppose I'm sort of sharing the risk!

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg told The Sun: 'We knew we'd get a hiding as soon as Charley was up for eviction.

'She's bitched, connived and back-stabbed her way into BB history and we've decided that enough is enough.'

Here here. 

Meanwhile, Friday will also see six new housemates enter the fray.

Reports suggest that they will be housed in hostel next door to the main house and that some of them will be evicted straightaway.

As I think we established some time ago, this year's Big Brother hasn't really set the world alight.

So we've all been wondering what strokes of genius the producers might come up with to increase interest a bit.

Well, they've put their heads together and come up with what they hope will be the ratings winner their jobs depend on.

What is this master stroke, I hear you ask?

They're going to send some new contestants into the house!

Yes, those clever chaps at Channel 4 are clearly of the opinion that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' and have reverted to the old tried (should that be tired?) and tested method of sending more dullards scraped from the bottom of life's barrell into the house.

The only problem being of course, that it is broke. It's what they tried last time and the time before that and the time before that.

Predictably, the 'new development' has been accompanied by a press release presumably penned by their latest work experience placement about how it is going to 'spice things up'.

I won't hold my breath...

The net is slowly closing in on Charley and this time it appears nothing will save her from eviction. 

She has been nominated alongside serial nominee Tracey for the public vote with housemates spending time in the diary room saying exactly what they felt about her.

Brian, the favourite to win the show, who was on the wrong end of a tongue lashing from Charley last week, said: 'I can't live with someone who's just gonna switch on me just like that.

'Even now, she can't take on board that it upset me. You wouldn't treat a dog the way she treated me... If you're gonna treat people like s**t, expect to be nominated.'

When the nominations were announced, Charley came out with a predictable 'I'm glad I'm going' while gormless Tracey simply raised her hands in the air and smiled.

Meanwhile, Chanelle, Sam and Amanda have been competing against each other to see who is the most stupid.

Quizzing the trio, Liam asked them to name four US Presidents.

'Tony Blair, Gordon Brown...' said Amanda.

Close with Blair I suppose...

She then chipped in with 'Margaret Thackcher'.

When the question turned to how many types of tree they could name, Chanelle said 'Christmas'.

Amanda repeated 'Christmas' before adding: 'Tree, bark... trees with pink leaves, trees with red leaves.'

Of course, there is a possiblity they were simply playing up to the cameras.

There is also the very real possiblity that they possess all the intelligence of an amoeba.
