Been Considering......
I bought myself a heart monitor for use at the gym - a bargain at £10 from Lloyds Pharmacy! I have been using it at the gym, mainly for when I am on the treadmill, and this has set me thinking (always dangerous!)The main reason I go to the gym is to burn off fat and to lose weight, although the increased energy and stamina is a bonus. According to all the books the best way to burn off fat is to exercise within 65% - 85% of your maximum heart rate. My maximum heart rate is 171bpm (220-my age), a rough 75% of which is 125 - 130 bpm.
I am currently doing, two, 12 minutes, sessions on the treadmill, which consist of a steady 5 to 6 kph for most of the exercise, with a 'run' at 9.5kph for the last minute. The last minute always (at the moment) brings up the 'high heart rate' flash on the treadmill, warning me to slow down, so obviously this is taking me almost to my maximum heart rate, and well outside my optimum fat burning zone.
Now what I need to work out is whether to alter my routine on the treadmill, and if so, how. Whether to drop the 'run' at the end, and extend my 'walking' stage to, say, 15 minutes. Or whether to drop the end run and perhaps put a couple of shorter running bits in the middle (so my routine is ______/\______/\______ rather than _________________/, if you see what I mean) Unfortunately last time I went to the gym (on Friday) my regular instructor was on holiday, so I shall have to wait until next time to catch up with her.
I shan't be going to the gym tonight - it is always far too busy on Monday's, and I hate queueing, so I shall continue to research until tomorrow night!
