Silly me, I'm so excited - I got to be a Weight Watchers helper!

Thursday, May 1st, 2008, 4:48 pm

Our new leader was asking for extra helpers the other day, so I went to class half an hour early tonight and offered to pitch in.

How completely girly and silly of me to have thoroughly enjoyed myself with it, but I REALLY had a blast and got inordinately excited about the prospect of doing the "shop". It felt just like being a big kid again and playing at "shop" when I was little - but with real money and lovely WW goodies of course!

The evening just FLEW by and I really enjoyed taking the money and working out the totals and giving the change etc! I just KNOW I would just LOVE to work in a shop. How fab at the end of the class, when the till balanced and the leader then said I was able to weigh in for free - EVEN IF I HAD GONE ABOVE MY 5lbs LEEWAY FOR GOAL!!! How fab is that? I didn't realise but apparently it's one of the perks of the job that you go to class FOR FREE!

In addition, there's a tiny pot of money to be shared out between the helpers. I'm not sure how it works out but it amounts to a couple of pounds - (to go towards a box of lovely RICH TOFFEE BARS - if I'd wanted!). It was a good job I hadn't taken any money with me, as I was sat in the middle of all the goodies all evening and hadn't eaten since lunch. I really fancied a whole box of the things by the end.

Anyway, I got to play shop and have fun all evening and I would certainly recommend it as a laugh for anyone who likes that sort of thing! You have to be willing to arrive a bit early and leave a bit after everyone else, but it was lovely to feel part of the team and the leader and her other over-worked helpers were REALLY grateful!

The BEST news of all was that on the WW scales, my HUGE weekend gain of 5lbs has all but been conquered (by dint of serious dieting since I got back) and I'm only a pound more than I weighed last Thursday before I went away! Hooray!

.... and I'm back!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008, 9:11 am

Blimey - 5 days without blogging - that's not like me! Mind you I HAVE been away and I have been rather busy catching up with work since I got back.

The weekend was lovely WE did absolutely LOADS of cycling - up hills and everything! I was PARTICULARLY proud of myself for cycling up some pretty steep ones and feeling like I could actually keep going at it for some time.

It's REALLY weird but it was almost like my fitness has passed a sort of level where I can maintain sustained exertion to quite a high level for quite a long time. Cycling to Dartmouth from Slapton for example: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1853027 some of the hills were 1 in 8 and 1 in 6, and NONE of it was flat it was up and down all the way - everywhere. But I was just able to go up and up and up - WOW how fabby was that!

That same day, we took the ferry from Dartmouth to Kingswear: http://www.southhams.gov.uk/sp-dartmouthlowerferry.htm and the fabby steam train all the way to Paignton: http://www.paignton-steamrailway.co.uk/ The sun shone, the birds sang and a fantastic day out at the seaside, complete with ice creams was had by all!

The day beforehand been a little overcast, but ever intrepid, we had cycled in the opposite direction to the lovely port town of Kingsbridge: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1853082 . We DID have to get off and walk up a couple of these hills, but they were more like 1 in 4!!!

All in all, I earned something like 45 exercise points this week (compared to my usual target of 10.5!) and even though I DID overeat, I managed to keep the gains down to a manageable level. Weigh-in-wise, I am relatively pleased that I didn't put on as much weight as the last time I went away for a long weekend. Only 5lbs on this time as opposed to 7lbs - but still, it's a gain and will take a bit of shifting.

I'm off again

Thursday, April 24th, 2008, 5:56 am

Another long weekend in my camper van, but this time to the seaside!

It's a Camping and Caravanning club site we've been to before http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/clubsites/ in South Devon called Slapton Sands, near a well established nature reserve of Slapton Ley: http://www.slnnr.org.uk/.

Let's hope I can manage to stay within my weekly points allowance this time and not put on half a stone in four days like I did last time!

Brain Freeze

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008, 5:30 am

OK so I was conscious and speaking (in French I think) for the entire 15 minutes of the oral exam last night - but I have little or no recall of what I actually said.

The time seemed to go on for ages and I kept thinking to myself "surely we must be up by now. Not ANOTHER question......" but I'm really struggling to remember exactly what she asked me and what I said in return.

I don't think I said a load of rubbish but I was vaguely aware of repeating myself rather a lot and know that the very last word I said was the feminine version of an adjective which should have agreed with a masculine noun...... But hey, it could have been worse, and at least I was talking the whole time. Indeed if my estimate of how it went last year was anything to go by, when I thought I had got a really crappy oral grade and it turned out to be a B, then what I feel or think now is going to be entirely unrepresentative!

Thanks to all who wished me well and roll on 16th June when I can say goodbye to exams for ever! (well until I get restless and want to challenge myself again! lol!)

Managed to Maintain at last

Monday, April 21st, 2008, 6:14 am

Well, it looks like it IS possible for me to maintain when I put my mind (and body) to it - for a week anyway. My "losing weight" daily allowance is 17 points therefore my maintaining allowance should be 23 per day (17 6), so that's what I went for this week.

This week I had my lovely day out in London to see Wicked courtesy of ivillage, and went way over my points on Tuesday - but thanks to some judicious planning and claw-back (and nothing less than 25 points of exercise, which I didn't eat) my average consumption this week has been 22 points and I've actually managed to STAY THE SAME! HOORAY!

OK, so I've probably banked, carried forward and/or saved more points from one day to the next than you are probably allowed to, but it's heart-warming that it can be done - for ONE week at least - and you CAN go majorly over your points for a treat for ONE day in a week and claw it back if necessary.

I'm not sure if I can maintain this level of exercise though. 25 points is a hell of a lot. It works out at about an hour and a half of moderate exercise EVERY day and who has the time or energy to do that EVERY day? lol! It's slightly concerning that I have to consume 33 FEWER points (unused allowance point plus unused exercise points) than WW think I should just to maintain, but who ever said life was fair?
