I have a new toy!

Saturday, June 30th, 2007, 3:52 pm

Regular readers may be aware that I like a bit of running. Those of you who pop in from time to time, may also know, I'm out of action f.t.b. with the weirdest pain in my hip, which is made worse by said running, so you'll also know I haven't been doing it for a bit. (sob!)

Two and a half weeks to be exact and I'm metaphorically climbing the walls (as we know in my current condition, literally doing that is beyond me! - Grrr!)

I tried 5 mins running on Thursday and how depressing that my hip was hurting like a bugger for the rest of the afternoon and all the next morning. I had to dive in to the anti-inflammatories again, which is never a good sign. Still, my health insurance company have given the go ahead, so I'm booked in with a physiotherapist on Thursday morning, so I'll keep you posted on that one.

In the meantime, unless I can do more exercise (and trust me, even walking was hurting), my WW goals are in jeopardy. Imagine how pleased I was then yesterday evening when partner walked through the door after work with a lateral thigh stepper under his arm. It was a gift from an aunt who bought it and didn't get on with it and she thought I might like it! I have to say I very impressed with it.

You can only do half an hour at a time (otherwise the resistance pistons heat up too much) but I have done half an hour for both days I've had it so far and no only does my hip not hurt (hooray!) but I was really working up a sweat! It's great to do while you're watching TV, otherwise tbh it would be a bit boring .... but for a freebie, the most important thing is that  I am finally getting some activity points under my belt, and feeling those exercise endorphins again.

Fantastic!

I have exciting news ...!

Thursday, June 28th, 2007, 8:38 am

I have just got the CL job!

How exciting! I have been thinking about it for a while and when a vacancy came up on Running for Fitness and Fun, I thought why not? There's lots to learn and a shiny new CL shield to wear but so far so good and it's fun!

Weight Watchers update

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007, 5:21 pm

Yeay - I lost 3lbs this week.

Double yeay, I made the Midsummer challenge (with 1lb in hand). That's 25 lbs over the last 12 weeks and the second MSN challenge in a row which I have managed to hit. Hooray and thanks to the girls on the WW board for all your help and support.

Triple yeay, I've just been out for a lovely meal and had, 3 courses (including desert) half a bottle of wine, and probably gone over my points for at least two days in one meal (again!!!). Still, I know I can live on fruit and soup for a couple of days to make up for it (hardly a good example to set, I know but a girl has to have a few treats now and again!).

On the down side, partner has fallen foul of the dreadful summer cold which is doing the rounds and double boo, I think I may have cought it - and I've only just got rid of the last one! D'oh!

Still, at least the rain has stopped now (it seemed to be going for nearly 48 hours over the weekend), and thank goodness we're not at risk from flooding, like the poor people of Rotherham. My heart goes out to you.

I've sent in a CL application

Sunday, June 24th, 2007, 10:50 am

Well, here goes nothing as they say. I've applied to be a CL on one of the boards I post on regularly.

I was checking out the CL page today: http://www.ivillage.co.uk/ivillageuk/comm/articles/0,10231 ,525271_572300,00.html and saw that and saw that Running For Fitness and Fun, has a vacancy. I've been posting there since April of this year (nearly 3 months) and thought, "Why not?"

I e-mailed my application this afternoon, but its all a bit 'cloak and dagger'! They don't tell you what format the application should take, nor are they very specific about what they need to know about an applicant! They even say, that due to the number of applications they get, you're not even guaranteed a reply - even if you are suitable but perhaps just pipped at the post by a better candidate. It's all very hush-hush and rather covert!

I've tried to include what I think they might want to know - you know, name, address, age, qualifications etc. All the sort of empirical data about a person that lets them weed out the criminals from the genuine. Then I've told them about which boards I usually post on and pretty much, to check out the sort of stuff I usually post. I figured that the most accurate window in to what a person might be like as a CL is to see what they have been like over the past months as an ordinary poster. Lastly I gave them a bit of info about what ideas I had for the board and how I might respond to people's queries and the rest is up to them.

I have no idea what the timescales are, when or even IF I'll hear anything and whether I'll have to speak to someone about it on the phone, or if it's all done by e-mail. As they also say, "Watch this space..." - I'll keep you posted.

Twiddling my thumbs - but not tapping!

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007, 5:09 am

Oh this is so frustrating. My hip is still painfull and I can't run. I am filling my days with all sorts of running preparation tasks and I can't actually get out and do it.

To top it all, the walking I did this week has made the pain worse, so I'm going to have to stop that until the pain gets completely better. Consequently, I have cut back what I've eaten this week, to ensure I don't put on as a result. No treats (that means NO CAKE!! - and you know how I luuuurve my CAKE) and lots of fruit, vegetables and soup. Bargain of the week was 454g of strawberries reduceed to 47p for quick sale. (ahem, I got 6 punnets!) Let's hope it doesn't start to become anti-social IYKWIM!!

It's the final weigh-in for the MSN Midsummer challenge on Monday girls, and I have only 2lbs more to lose (I upped my pledge) to ensure I hit my 24lb loss target over the last 12 weeks. I'm not going to blow it on the final straight.

In the mean time, I am planning ........

Something else I love (apart from cake) is my teeny tiny pink girly i-pod shuffle, which was a birthday present this year. I find running to a music beat, really helps when you're road running. Unlike someone on a treadmil, who has the conveyor belt speed to pace themselves to, a road runner, has fewer speed clues (well other than "OMG - I can't breathe" or "dammit, my legs hurt" - and by that time, of course it's too late to slow yourself down). I like running to a beat, as it paces me and makes sure I can complete the distance. With running at this level, it's all about the length of time you spend running, not how fast you can go!

I have finally catalogued all 6000 of my mp3 tracks on the PC with their BPM (beats per minute) and have amassed over 500 different tracks which I like and which come out at between 160 and 180 BPM which is my natural running cadence. This is great because I was getting fed up of the 20 or so, I had identified and was playing over and over (and over) again. Any cracks along the lines of "oh Mellers you have WAY too much time on your hands" will be met with a hard stare! Yes I know I do, that's part of the problem!

I used this great application available free to download from MixMeister: http://www.mixmeister.com/download_freestuff.html it's Soooooo much easier than those manual counters which require you to tap the keyboard in time to the music and then enter the data to the mp3 tag manually. This one, imports the files, analyses them AND write the BPM count to itunes for you. All you have to do is set it going .... and wait! 6000 songs took about 13 hours!, mind you, that's 13 hours I wasn't tapping my keyboard like a divvy!

Then all I have to do is set my i-pod shuffle to autofill from those tracks, and wey-hey - I'll be off! (or at least I will when my hip is better).

In the mean time, perhaps I can sort my CDs in to alphabetical order or file my bank statements..... or submit my tax return. Nah, I'm not THAT desperate....
