A little Elvis for Jack’s birthday

Monday, March 26th, 2007, 6:34 pm

We've just spent the weekend celebrating my nephew's birthday. Jack is 6. Just 6. He's sparky and boisterous, just like many other 6 year olds, but there is something special about Jack, and it's not just the fact that he's an especially kind and generous for a little boy, which he is.

The thing is... he's obsessed with Elvis. He's obsessed with Elvis in an almost Louis-Theroux-Weird-Weekend sort of way. He knows all the words to Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender and he can sing along and swing his hips like the King himself. It's hilarious...

He recently told my sister that it was likely he would actually BE Elvis when he grows up - apparently this was due to the fact that his hair is getting ‘blacker and blacker'.

You can only but imagine the delight when he discovered the birthday package in the post from his Grandad contained a ‘real life' Elvis suit complete with side burns and dark glasses (a suit like one he would have worn during the later ‘burger years' rather than the earlier and much more attractive ‘comeback tour'.)

It was his favourite present, well his second favourite present. His actual favourite present as he told us was from my Mum. My Mum is a World Vision sponsor and gives each of her grandchildren a gift for life for their birthdays. It's a lovely idea and very much appreciated.

You can imagine Jack's delight and my sister's confusion when he announced excitedly on the morning of his birthday: "Guess what Mum, Granny's got a little boy from Africa and he's coming in the post."

I could only giggle at the thought of a little boy from Africa arriving to be greeted by a mini Elvis strumming on his guitar on the stairs...

I LOVED this blog! Made me giggle so much, your nephew and my son would get on great - until recently he wanted to be a "hoover" when he grows up.
