'World's Most Useless Things' Day

Friday, April 6th, 2007, 6:02 pm

It's been one of those days today, where the fact that so many things are just rubbish and don't work (like jugs that don't pour) has been the theme.

Object number one: My shower:  Had a shower this morning (we have recently moved into this house), and it's one of those rubbish ones where the water is either scaldingly hot or bone-chilling freezing.  It took about 20 minutes to find the right balance, but the whole point of showers is that they're quick. Oh, and in case you wondered about my personal hygiene, I have been having baths up to now!

Object/place number two: My local pub. It's one of those that seems to open when they feel like it and serve food when they feel like it.  I was told they don't open at lunchtimes during the week, and close on Sunday evenings. We  went for drink last Thursday night, and there were loads of people eating, so we decided to go and eat there the following Wednesday night.  Got there, but 'no we're not doing food tonight, sorry'. 'So when do you do food', 'sometimes, it's best to try and book'.  Grrrr there goes the sponteneity of popping out to the local when you don't' feel like cooking!  As it's a holiday today thought I'd go for lunch today with my kids (it's a Bank Holiday, they're SURE to be doing food, aren't they), so I walked over just to check.  Not only was it not doing food it wasn't even open!!! So the accolade of the World's Most Useless Pub was granted.

Mind you, they do serve San Miguel on draught,  so it's not all bad.

Object number three: My washing line.  Now I'm a lazy tumble-drier sort of woman, but as it's a nice day thought I'd hang up a few things on the newly installed washing line (it's a rented house and the landlady provided it last week).  It's one of those retractable ones so it's not always in the way.  The trouble is, it doesn't work!! I pulled it out, attached it to the opposite wall, hung up a towel............and it fell to the ground!  There's no mechanism on it to hold the line up(as in to stop it pulling out too much) once it's pulled out.  Unless I'm being a complete idiot and just can't see how it's done, it is yet another useless object.

So that was today, not useless all in all, but plagued by useless things.

Another addition to the useless things list.....

The Post Office redirection service.  We moved 3 weeks ago and keep getting stuff correctly addressed to our purchasersand redirected to here. OK, the first 4 letters of their surname are the same as mine, but you pay for this service (and it's not cheap), so expect a bit more care to be taken. And they sometimes stick the label over the whole thing so we don't know until we've opened it that it's not for us.  We opened their bank statement today.

I feel a complaint to the PO is on the cards.

Oh and feeling an idiot about the washing line, dp, ever practical('why don't you look at the instructions?'), sorted that one out! Doh, what a fool I am.  But still, that is 3 useless things in 2 days as the PO has replaced the washing line.

Happy Easter everyone!

Spring has sprung!!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007, 5:31 am

Just love all this sunshine, our garden looks lovely at the moment.  Apologies to any of you having miserable weather, but it really puts me in a good mood.  Pity I can't persuade the 2 tearaways to get up from in front of the telly and go and play outside.  Yes I know I can switch telly off, but they are nice an quiet which means I can get on with work.

I'm so glad we moved now, after all my misgivings......
