I'm iVillage.co.uk's beauty editor. I wouldn't be surprised if the post office had to assign me my own personal postman to deliver all the lovely lotions and potions that I'm sent to try. And yet I still get excited every time a new lipgloss lands on my desk. It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Do you trust beauty companies?

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007, 7:45 am

Dove recently conducted extensive research to find out what British women think about the beauty industry in general. The findings are really interesting. For example only 3% of women questioned think that beauty companies are trust worthy while just 12% believe product claims from much of the beauty industry are honest and realistic. I've compiled a selection of the findings below but I'd be really interested to know what you think so please let me know by posting your comments below...

How much do UK women trust beauty companies?
• Only 3% of women think that all beauty companies are trustworthy, with 31% being sceptical and thinking that either none of them or very few are trustworthy

Who are we recommending beauty products to?
• A whopping 84% of women would only recommend a beauty product to their friends or family if they truly believe that it made them look or feel better
• 45% of women very rarely recommend beauty products to their friends and family as they are not usually sufficiently impressed by them

Who do we get our beauty advice from?
• We value beauty advice from our family and best friend (45%) much more than celebrity endorsement, which is not seen as being at all credible (0%)

How honest do we think beauty companies are about the products and what they do?
• A massive 47% of British women either disagree or strongly disagree that beauty companies are honest and realistic about the results their products can deliver. This compares to only 12% who believe their product claims are honest and realistic

Do UK women know how to look after their skin?
• British women know what is good for their skin, with 63% agreeing that having skin that looks good can be achieved through moisturising every day. Only 10% of women disagreed

The comments in the survey made me laugh. It's funny how we are all so sceptical and mistrusting of the beauty industry and yet we manage to suspended this scepticism as soon as the latest 'miracle product' comes on the market! I'm guilty as charged with this one and can't wait to get my hands on another pot of Eve Lom cleanser - i'm obviously one of the 84% who only recommends beauty products if i believe they make me look better :)

I agree with the findings.
\n
\nI think that mositurising definately helps our skin look better and lots of people swear by drinking water but I can't say this has ever made a noticable difference to me.
\n
\nI've heard that Paris Hilton's skin is incredible - well what do you expect with all the time and money to buff, pamper and relax.
\n
\nLooking and feeling rested is a big part of looking good I think but most of us don't get enough of it because we are racing round trying to make ends meet.
\n
\nI don't believe that face creams which claim to make us look younger or reduce wrinkles really work, if they did we would all be looking 16. Even the mightly Protect and Perfect which caused riots when it ran out... have you noticed millions of younger looking women since it came back in stock? Of course that won't stop me buying more when my current bottle runs out tho! LOL.

There is something interesting about the contradiction between how much (or little, I should say) we trust beauty companies but how strongly we can fall for their various endorsements. I can't quite believe how much some companies charge for some products, I just go for the stuff that smells nice, feels OK, and doesn't cost too much. Never trust the companies, look at what happened with Ms Cruz!(although by the sounds of things no one's listening to the celebs anyway...)
